Buyers Find Wood Boats Distinctive and Stylish

Today's fashion conscious paddlers are turning their attention to distinctive hand made wood canoes and kayaks. "Now that I have a nice car, I want a nice looking canoe to sit on top of it, enough with Kevlar already, it's so yesterday, " commented Tammany Hall. "Everybody and their sister has a Kevlar or Royalex boat. How is anyone going to notice my new vehicle with those?"

With gas prices expected to spike this summer, demand for canoes and kayaks is growing while jet skis and other gas hungry personal watercraft are expected to dive. Many new buyers see custom hand made wood canoes as an alternative to mass market watercraft. Increasingly paddlers are spending a few extra bucks for hand crafted wood boats. Companies like Eskimo Tom's Featherweight Wood Watercraft are trying to keep up with the demand for these distinctive boats.

"Folks are finding the beauty of wood irrepressible," says Tom Gerds, the "Tom" in Eskimo Tom. Gerds has been researching and constructing durable lightweight wood boats for over a fiftieth of a century. He delivers hundreds of custom construction options for paddlers interested in unique outward expressions of their inner beauty. Gerds has developed numerous plans for paddlers and will have them available online sometime in 2005.

"It may take a little while to get those plans online," says Gerds. A customer gave me the idea a few weeks ago and here we are at the warm months after the ice goes out in Minnesota. Paddlers are waking up from their Winter slumber and will be considering wood canoes and kayaks. It gets pretty busy around here when the lakes are open."

While the Kevlar and carbon fiber models are indeed ultra light, some paddlers find them just plain spooky because they are so flexible. Some equate flexible with flimsy. "You don't get that flimsy feeling with my boats yet they are surprisingly light," says Gerds. "I have a Kevlar boat and there is no way to rig sailing gear to it without it flexing quite a bit."
